The owners of Domaine de Chevalier, the Bernard family, have a long history dating all the way back to the 1155! What we know of as Domaine de Chevalier in the Graves/Pessac Leognan, appellation, was purchased in 1865 by Arnaud Ricard and his son Jean for 33,000 francs. At the time, the Ricard family were familiar with the Bordeaux wine trade, as they worked as coopers, producing wine barrels. In 1865, the estate began selling their wine under the Gascon name of “Chivaley”. In those days, the 44 hectare property was used for mostly food crops and ranching. While there was a tiny Bordeaux wine making operation at the estate, because there was no money in wine, it was not their main interest.
Its complex and intense nose of red berries and blackberries, plum jam, mocha, chocolate, and spices remind us the specific climate of this hot vintage ... In the mouth, full and tight structure, fine, elegant and racy tannins, revealing the mineral flavors of liquorice and smoke of the terroir. Very balanced wine, strong and fine.
The red Domaine de Chevalier, the flagship of the Pessac-Leognan appellation, belongs to the elite of the great classified growth of Bordeaux.
The grapes are tripple sorted: 1st in the vines, 2nd on the complete bunch on the sorting table and 3rd by individual grapes on the sorting table. Vatting is done by gravity without pumping. Alcholic fermentation in stainless steel and coated steel temperature controlled vats. Barrel aged for 18 months.
65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 2.5% Cabernet Franc, 2.5% Petit Verdot

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Right Bank consultant Stephane Derenoncourt was brought in as the lead consultant at this noble estate in Pessac-Leognan. As a result, the tannins are sweeter, the oak is more subtle and better integrated, and the wine is more textured and complex. An evolved, complex bouquet of black currants, forest floor, smoked herbs, and sweet cherries as well as currants emerges from the 2003. It displays supple tannin, medium to full body, beautiful purity, and a classic, elegant finish. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2019.

Wine Spectator
Intense aromas of blackberry, cherry, tobacco and milk chocolate. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a beautiful finish of ripe fruit and light earth. Very balanced and refined. Delicious already. Best after 2010. 7,500 cases made. –JS
