Vinyes Singulars Minipuça 2021 is an invigorating sparkling wine redolent with scents of white fruit, citrusy undertones, and a hint of spice. For many years, xarel·lo was regarded as a secondary grape compared to other varieties used in the production of wines and cavas. Nevertheless, it is an indigenous white grape variety from the region of Catalunya (Spain), which, besides being one of the principal varieties used in the production of cava, has experienced a resurgence in the past few decades as the cornerstone for crafting high-quality wines. This renaissance of xarel·lo entails a more meticulous approach to its cultivation, vinification, and the creation of wines that accentuate its distinctive qualities: vibrancy, acidity, and aging potential. One of the vignerons who has adeptly recognized the heritage of Penedès and extracted its utmost expression is Ignasi Seguí. An oenologist whose project Vinyes Singulars has positioned the natural wines of this Catalan region like no other.
Within his portfolio, we find Vinyes Singulars Minipuça, an ancestral sparkling wine made from the xarel·lo variety, whose vines are nestled among olive trees, almond trees, cereal crops, and vegetable gardens. Organic farming practices are complemented by biodynamic treatments, and the harvest is carried out manually at the optimal point of ripeness. In the winery, an ancestral vinification process takes place, where the wine first ferments and, before fermentation is complete, it is bottled so that the remaining sugars produce the bubbles that transform it into a sparkling wine.
With a name that alludes to a tiny insect that is hardly visible to the naked eye, Vinyes Singulars Minipuça presents us with a clear, natural, and effervescent wine. In a very limited production, it reveals the grandeur of a variety that for a long time has been overlooked.
