Tablas Creek is a pioneer of California's Rhone movement.  Founded in 1989, it is the culmination of a friendship between two of the international wine community's leading families dating back to 1967: the Perrin family of Chateau de Beaucastel and the Haas family of Vineyard Brands.

After a four-year search, the partners chose Paso Robles, California, for its many similarities to the southern Rhone, and began the lengthy process of importing vine cuttings, building a grapevinenursery, and creating an estate vineyard from scratch.

The Tablas Creek Vineyard 2021 Esprit de Tablas is our flagship red blend, chosen from the best lots of six estate-grown varieties propagated from budwood cuttings from the Château de Beaucastel estate. The wine is based on the dark red fruit, earth, spice and mid-palate richness of Mourvèdre, with additions of Grenache for forward fruit, approachability and lushness, Syrah for mineral, aromatics, and back-palate tannins, Counoise for brambly spice and acidity, as well as the dark, herby Vaccarese and the juicy, spicy Cinsaut.

The nose is deep and inviting, clearly Esprit: new leather, sweet spice, currants and dark chocolate. On the palate, broad and rich, with notes of flourless chocolate cake, black plum, meat drippings, and a spicy, nutty mincemeat pie element. The finish is brambly blackberry, black fig, and milk chocolate, with chewy tannins that promise years of meaty development. Immensely appealing now, but also with the structure and intensity to reward time in the cellar. Enjoy any time in the next 25 years.

 A perfumed blend of dusty rose, raspberry, lavender and wet stone forms an inviting bouquet as the 2021 Esprit de Tablas comes to life in the glass. It washes across the palate with juicy waves of ripe red and blue fruit, leaving a mineral staining in their wake. A primary concentration combines with sweet tannins, creating perfect punctuation for the experience. The 2021 Esprit de Tablas is built for the cellar. (AG)

 The 2021 Esprit de Tablas, still in barrel, is a blend of 35% Mourvèdre, 26% Grenache, 23% Syrah, 7% Vaccarese, 5% Cinsaut and 4% Counoise. It has a medium ruby color and opens with touches of tar that give way to black cherries, blueberries, oolong tea leaves, pipe tobacco and orange peel. The medium-bodied palate is chalky and fresh with a balance of concentrated fruits and pleasantly rustic nuances, finishing with generous earthy and spicy accents.
