STORY
Frank Mitolo’s father, Bruno, was born to an Italian viticulturist. He arrived in Australia aged 14, with farming in his blood, to work alongside his brothers. With him, he brought the ethos of his homeland, the Abruzzo region – forte e gentile or strong and gentle. Bruno forged a new life in Australia that laid the foundation for his success. Marsican is named after the rare Marsican bear, native to the Abruzzo region. The same bear can be seen in the night sky over Italy forming the Ursa Major, a constellation that has been used as a navigational reference point for millennia. Marsican is a tribute to Bruno’s heritage, and his enduring influence over the family.
TASTING NOTE
Deep crimson colour. Intensely concentrated bouquet that has developed layered complexity with bottle age. Aromas of dried blackberry and black plum intertwine with more savoury notes of ground coffee, cigar box, Chinese five spice and dried herbs. Full-bodied and dense, but with a refined balance. It exhibits primary flavours of red plums, currants and mulberries with overtones of crushed rock, salumi and Gaeta olives.
WINEMAKING
Destemmed and crushed to 2 tonne open top fermenters, pumped over once daily for 9 days. The ferment was kept at a cool 22°C throughout in an attempt to extract the tannin, colour and flavour very softly and to hold onto the pure fruit characters. Once pressed, the wine was transferred to 100% new French Oak Hogs Head Barrels for natural malolactic fermentation and 18 months maturation before being individually barrel selected for the final blend. The wine is clarified by racking only and bottled without fining or filtration.
VINEYARD
Lopresti Home Block Vineyard – Flour Mill Road, Whites Valley.
Lopresti Home Block, less than 2 kilometers from the coastal town of Aldinga and only 4 kilometers from the beach itself. Ngaltinga Formation derived alluvial grey sandy clay and biscay soils with pockets of sand interbeds. These highly reputed soils maintain soil moisture during the growing season but dry out in summer which helps to control vine vigour and concentrate flavours in the fruit. Cooling sea breezes off the Gulf of St Vincent cool the vineyard and help to retain freshness and vibrancy.
