The Wagner family's winemaking legacy spans three generations, with roots in Napa Valley dating back to 1915. Chuck Wagner, who co-founded Caymus Vineyards, expanded the family's vision to the cooler coastline of Monterey County. By 1988, he began planting in the Santa Lucia Highlands, a region shaped by morning fog, bright sunshine, and gusting winds that provide an extended growing season ideal for Chardonnay. This exceptional site became the foundation for Mer Soleil, a winery now run by Chuck's eldest son, Charlie F. Wagner II, since 2001.
Winemaker's Notes: Taking its name from "the sea and sun"—the two forces of nature that shape its exotic character—Mer Soleil Chardonnay is as dramatic as its Monterey Coast origin. Winemaker Charlie Wagner, whose fascination with Chardonnay began in high school, crafts this wine to be both bold yet fresh. The region's cooling winds and longer growing season allow grapes to remain on the vine longer, leading to the development of intense aromas and expressive flavors, revealing a singular approach to farming and winemaking. Over the years, this wine has evolved to be leaner, with its citrus notes and vibrant natural acidity reflecting the unique climate.
The 2023 Mer Soleil Chardonnay Reserve presents layered aromas and flavors. On the nose, enjoy hints of citrus, intertwined with notes of brown spice and honeysuckle. The palate is round and creamy, featuring delightful notes of lemon squares and baked croissant. This rich yet vibrant expression culminates in a refreshing, clean finish, showcasing the characteristic intensity and freshness of the Santa Lucia Highlands.
