The origin (the vine, the grape)
Vineyards in the DOCG area of the Tirano Municipality are located in the heart of the coastal area, at altitudes of 450/550 metres above sea level and are characterised by spectacular stonewall terraces and unique “murache”.
These granite rock masses, removed from the soil to make room for vineyards many years ago, are positioned along the edge of the terrace. The Nebbiolo – Chiavennasca variety is planted in the small amounts of soil at the foot of these masses: ancient, even centuries-old vines which ripen grapes rested on stones, for more intense solar radiation.
“Murache” grapes are smaller, present a slightly more intense colour and ripen just before the rest of the vine field. The bunches are harvested and placed into crates a few days before the remaining nebbiolo. They are then taken to drying facilities and are slightly raisined over a period of 30 – 40 days, to further enrich and concentrate their juices.
The Cellar
The vinification process for this wine involves the use of “fortification”, traditionally present in the past, in Valtellina wine production.
The wine, obtained from Nebbiolo grapes fermented in early October, is mixed with slightly raisined “murache” grapes in around mid-November to favour the resumption of alcoholic fermentation and to complete malolactic transformation.
Already in December the wine, strengthened in structure and bestowed with a greater complexity and intensity, is aged in 1500 litre oak barrels and barriques. The ageing process is constantly monitored and continues in a fresh cellar for a further 18-20 months, followed by bottling, a further 6 months of “élevage” and bouquet perfection.
In the glass
Ruby red with fleeting crimson notes and subtle slate tonalities. Heavenly and enveloping, its aroma is characterised by elegant ripe red fruit sensations (cherry plum, blackberry and a slight hint of morello cherry), accompanied by notes of toasted hazelnut, tobacco and medicinal herbs.
On the palate it harmoniously presents the intensity of its structure, created by savoury and enveloping tannins, with a generous fruity-toasted character. True to the austerity of the Nebbiolo grape variety, it expresses the characteristic elegance and refinement of alpine Valtellina wine production.
Evolution
Immensely satisfying and versatile when first made available for consumption, after two years of ageing. However it further improves and refines itself over time, even over lengthier periods.
Correct conservation enables its qualitative growth over the years, peaking at 10-12 years of ageing in the bottle. It can thrive for even longer periods, up to 25-30 years: this is when it also opens up to balsamic and resinous notes.
