Winemaker Notes

The color is an opaque ruby-garnet, an abyss for white light! The aroma opens with brooding black raspberry syrup, milk chocolate, and briarythicket. Dark currants, slight peppercorn with brown sugar, molasses, and a touch of aromatic cedar fill in the complexity. The tannins are reallyquite pleasant with plenty of structure for age-worthiness. The flavor is in the realm of blackberry, dark chocolate, and black currant with a long, lingering finish.

Blend: 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 6% Cab Franc

Professional Ratings

A real success story for this hot vintage. Feels gracious and generous in the mouth, offering complex, fat flavors of blackberries, cherries, raspberries, mocha and cedar that turn spicy on the finish. The tannins are elaborately ripe and fine. The well-known vineyard is on the Rutherford bench, and production was 2,300 cases. Drinkable now, and should age well for at least a decade.

Kudos to winemaker Ted Edwards. Lastly, the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Sycamore Vineyard, which is just to the south of Bosche, is 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, from the gravelly, clay and loamy soils of this area. It, too, was aged 24 months in French oak and seems dense, full-bodied, powerful and backward as well. Most of the 2004s are far more open than this cuvee and the Bosche, but there is plenty of ripe fruit, moderate tannin and a deep black currant, blackberry, smoky sweetness, with a full, voluminous mouth texture. Give this one another 2-3 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 15-20.

Aromas of plums and fresh mushrooms with balsamic undertones. Hints of dried sage and other herbs. Medium body. Savory and fresh. Holding on beautifully. Drink or hold.

92 Wine & Spirits
There's an earthy, loamy feel to the tannins of this wine, buried under fresh, floral, fruit-skin tension. The fruit itself is juicy and firm, held tight by the tannin, opening to a supple cabernet texture and flavor that will meld well with rack of lamb.
