Many domaines in Burgundy can trace their roots back over 100 years, but only a handful can claim more than 200 years of history. Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé can trace a line back over 550 years, to 1450 and the Chambolle vines of one Jean Moisson.

Highly regarded as the greatest estate in Chambolle Musigny, today the domaine is headed by its 20th generation – Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette, the granddaughters of the late Comte Georges de Vogüé.

Outer quote mark I have tasted this many times since I originally reviewed it and the '01 Musigny has displayed quite a bit of bottle variation with some examples being fantastic and others being almost difficult to like. There is some secondary development now evident on the very spicy nose that also displays notes of sandalwood, soy, dried flowers and dried herbs on the mostly red berry fruit nose. There is fine detail and ample minerality present on the intense, powerful and focused medium-bodied flavors that exhibit impeccably good balance on the explosively long finish. Outer quote mark In color it's a translucent deep red, with no brown at all yet. The aromas are pure joy, and these are the unedited notes I jotted straight away: 'a lovely mature richness: all of the exhalations of the land at the end of a long summer. Mellow, full, animal, earthy: glowing and gorgeous. The best nose yet: the most complete and perfect.' Outer quote mark The 2001 vintage of Musigny from the Comte de Vogüé estate is more complex and evolved than its sibling from 2002, but it is a bit shorter on the backend. The bouquet is quite lovely today, offering up scents of cherries, blood orange, woodsmoke, a good base of soil, gamebird and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nicely complex, with a good core and grip, elegant balance and a moderately long, focused and classy finish. This is a very good wine, but by the high standards of Domaine Comte de Vogüé, this is just a bit short. Inner quote mark (5/2020)

Outer quote mark Good full red. Roasted red fruits, dark cherry and truffle on the nose. Boasts a rather wild, concentrated core of red fruits, spices and truffle, along with a faint vegetal element. Finishes with a serious dusting of tannins and building length. Winemaker François Millet described 2001 as 'a rebel vintage, but a rebel for a good cause.
