For nearly three decades, Colgin Cellars has been dedicated to enriching and sustaining the hallowed history of Napa Valley wine production. Our goal has been to craft elegant and profound wines that inspire memories.
Since 1992, Colgin Cellars navigates the exciting future of Napa Valley wine with the same focus, passion, and reverence that guided us for our first thirty years.
Gentle slopes define the graceful beauty of this unique site. The western hills are rich in volcanic soil. With bountiful sunshine and a high, cool climate, Cariad stretches out over some of Napa's finest land.
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, the grapes for "Cariad" hail from ancient riverbeds turned hillsides overlooking the heart of Napa Valley. Named for the Welsh word for love, "Cariad's" opulence and structure are characterized by exotic notes of violet, dark fruit, and a gravelly minerality. We say that "Cariad" is a sphere, which is purple.
Cariad, the Welsh word for “love”, is a Bordeaux-style red wine blended from three outstanding vineyards owned and managed by David Abreu. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc from Madrona Ranch are blended with small amounts of fruit from Thorevilos and Howell Mountain, producing a wine of enormous proportions with a classic structure that is the Colgin hallmark: a plethora of vibrant aromas, voluptuous at mid-palate, with impeccable balance and an exceptionally long finish. A wine as seductive as its name.

The aromas of iodine, oyster shells and mushrooms turn to blackberries. Full body, polished tannins and a plush, velvety texture. Gorgeous length and tension. Aftertaste turns to leaves, forest floor and blackberries. Salty and savory. Wow.

A big, rich, deep and caressing style, with wonderful textural nuances that smooth out the chewy dark berry, graphite, gravel and black licorice flavors. Most impressive on the finish, which sails along, gaining depth and persistence. Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Drink now through 2038.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2014 Proprietary Red Cariad, which is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon but also contains important percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, is made from purchased fruit from David Abreu’s vineyard holdings on Howell Mountain and in St. Helena. This wine offers loads of unsmoked cigar tobacco, melted licorice, charcoal embers, blackberry and mulberry fruit, a full-bodied mouthfeel, stunning intensity, impressive equilibrium, and well-integrated acidity and tannin. It is another beauty, obviously coming from first-growth terroirs. This should drink beautifully for 20-25 years.
