When selecting vineyards for Grenache Blanc I am seeking an x-factor in each one that delivers an intensity of character. The energy that hypnotically makes your head turn when a certain someone walks by, making you blush as they catch your gaze. It’s all lost in its translation though it feels absolute at least for that moment. Like walking through a massive field of sunflowers at high-noon and everyone and everything is ascendant.
For the 2021 vintage the duo of vineyards in this 100% Grenache Blanc blend provides a kinetic foundation for one another. Kimsey captures an energy akin to freshly candied citrus - grapefruit, lime and oranges all in one. Kimsey was 100% carbonic fermentation on the skins and Martian was neutral-barrel fermented for a lip-smacking briny-ness almost the foil to Kimsey’s phenolics. Together they create something I simply call “yum”.
