The history of Bodega Contador began with Benjamin Romeo's dream of pressing wines from his native San Vicente de la Sonsierra (Rioja). In 1996, he acquired a cave carved into the rock below the old castle and began to selectively acquire individual plots around the village. In 1996, he was able to bottle the first vintage la Cueva del Contador in small quantities. The reactions to the wines encouraged Benjamin to expand production. He equipped his parents' garage with modern winemaking equipment and continued to lead his winery towards success as a "garage winemaker". Robert Parker's 100-point ratings for the 2004 and 2005 vintages gave the winery a further boost and enabled the realization of a long-cherished wish of Benjamin: a new, state-of-the-art winery. The high standard of quality has not changed since then. Green harvesting, ageing only in the best French oak barrels and meticulous selection of the grapes give rise to wines of exceptional quality from the more than 50 different plots, all characterized by different microclimates and soils.
