As a child in Monção, Portugal, Anselmo Mendes grew up surrounded by the culture of the vine and wine production, primarily of the local Alvarinho variety. He started producing wine himself in 1998 from Alvarinho in the Minho Valley, and his name has since become inseparable from this variety. He has long been widely recognized by critics as not only the most innovative producer of Vinho Verde, but one of the greatest winemakers in Portugal; in addition to his wines from Alvarinho in the Minho Valley, he also makes Loureiro in the Lima Valley, as well as Avesso in the Douro.
100% Alvarinho, grown in vineyards along the Minho river at low altitudes, where there is a high pebble content in the soil. The grapes are destemmed and given a short skin maceration, followed by a slow fermentation at low temperatures. Clean tropical and citrus fruit flavors are framed by a stony mineral finish; this shows lovely structure and balance. Enjoy with squid, octopus or tuna.
