This wine comes from the Tokaj region of Hungary. But forget everything you know about Tokaji, the dessert wine — this is completely unrelated except that it's born from the humid, unirrigated vineyards in Sopron. Kekfrankos is a fresh and earthy local specialty. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in large, neutral oak barrels, and the result is compelling! On the nose: gorgeous sous bois that almost smells like aged Chinon in the best way possible — so many layers of truffle. On the palate: earthiness gives way to fresh black fruit, mild tannins and minerality. This is pretty interesting stuff, best served with 40 minutes in the fridge; pair it with mushrooms, root vegetables, and earthy pasta combos
